1. Questions for Your Review

What is a commercial collection agency?
A commercial collection agency recovers past-due debts owed by one business to another. Unlike consumer collectors, it works business-to-business: invoices for services, equipment, materials or freight. Melton Norcross & Associates handles commercial accounts only, with a specialty in the oil and gas industry.

What is the difference between commercial and consumer debt collection?
Commercial collection involves debts between businesses; consumer collection involves personal debts such as medical bills or credit cards. The laws, tactics and timelines differ. Commercial collectors can move faster and use tools like liens and asset investigation. Melton Norcross does not collect consumer debt.

When should I send a past-due account to a collection agency?
Most businesses should place an account once it is 90 days past due, or sooner if warning signs appear: broken payment promises, unanswered calls, partial payments without explanation, or a customer pulling equipment off a job. The older an account gets, the harder it is to recover.

How does the collection process work?
You place the account with your invoices and documents. We review it, investigate the debtor and their assets, and make contact. If needed, we use demand letters, liens or legal action through our attorney network. You're kept informed at every step, and you only pay if we collect.

How long does it take to collect a commercial debt?
Many accounts resolve within 30 to 90 days, but timing depends on the debtor, the size of the balance, the documentation and whether legal action is needed. Accounts placed early, with complete paperwork, generally resolve fastest.

What percentage of commercial debt is recovered?
Recovery depends mostly on the age of the account. Accounts placed within the first few months are far more likely to be recovered than accounts that are a year or more past due. That's why acting early matters more than any other factor.

How do I choose a commercial collection agency?
Look for an agency that handles only commercial accounts, publishes its fees, works on contingency, understands your industry, keeps you informed, and has an attorney network for accounts that need legal action. For oilfield work, experience with mineral liens is essential.

Will using a collection agency hurt my relationship with the customer?
A professional agency protects the relationship where possible. We contact debtors firmly but respectfully, and many accounts are resolved with a payment plan. If a customer has stopped paying entirely, the relationship has usually changed already; recovering what you're owed comes first.
