1. Questions for Your Review

What is a mineral lien?
A mineral lien attaches an unpaid claim for oil and gas work to the well, the lease and, in some cases, the production. It gives oilfield service providers leverage beyond the company that hired them. Texas and Louisiana both provide these liens, under different rules.

Who can file a mineral lien in Texas?
Texas law generally protects those who provide labor, equipment, materials or services for drilling, operating or completing an oil or gas well or pipeline, including contractors and many subcontractors. Whether a specific job qualifies depends on the work and the contract chain.

How long do I have to file a mineral lien?
Lien filing windows are measured in months, not years, and generally start from the last day work was performed or materials were delivered. Texas and Louisiana set different deadlines and notice rules, so record your last date of work and act quickly.

What is the Louisiana Oil Well Lien Act?
The Louisiana Oil Well Lien Act (LOWLA) gives people who perform work or supply materials for oil and gas wells in Louisiana a privilege on the well, the lease and production. It has its own notice and filing requirements, separate from Texas law.

What if the operator hasn't paid the contractor who hired me?
Payment problems often travel down the chain from operator to contractor to subcontractor. Lien rights can help in exactly this situation, because a lien ties your claim to the property you worked on, not just to the company that hired you.

Why use a collection agency that specializes in oil and gas?
Oilfield debts involve field tickets, lease and well details, multi-tier contracts and lien rights that general agencies often miss. A specialist knows what documents matter, which deadlines apply, and how operators and service companies actually pay.
